Responding to the 5/12/08 Earthquake in Sichuan, China

Almost all of us have heard about last week's 7.9 magnitude earthquake in China's Sichuan province, but many of us don't know how we can respond or what we can do as individuals to try to help the victims of the quake, most of whom have seen their entire lives destroyed in the blink of an eye and many of whom are still in desperate need of relief. I've put together a collection of links for people who would like to donate money to various relief funds, and I hope you'll take the time to explore some of these possibilities and donate what you can. Even if your donation doesn't seem like a lot to you, it will surely make a huge difference in the lives of the people who were affected by the quake.

China-Earthquake-relief.com is a Drupal blog set up in the aftermath of the quake to provide people with information about donations.

The Red Cross has set up a special account to care for the victims of the Sichuan Earthquake.

China Tomorrow Education Fund is a foundation pledging to help the school children of Sichuan and to help with the reconstruction effort.

IfGoGo.com also features a long list of places to donate, organized by payment method. If you're not sure where to start, this is a good place.

Just make sure when you donate that your money goes to an organization with transparency; as much as I hate to admit it, in situations like this, there are always a few people who think of it as an opportunity to prey on others' goodness for their own gain.
